I built these for friends, as part of angel investments or to help early teams test an idea. Some found a use; others showed us where to stop or change direction.

01 2024

YYZ Mortgage

Daily mortgage rates, posted to TikTok as video, automatically.

A scraper collects the day’s mortgage rates. A headless browser records the rates, prices and payment calculations as a 60fps video and posts it to TikTok automatically.

What I did: Built the scraper and the video pipeline, improving on earlier work so the videos render cleanly at 60fps.
What I learned: Web video codecs, and getting headless Chrome to launch reliably inside Docker so it can record a screen.

02 2023–2024

Stllr Gold

Daily prices for gold, silver and currencies, posted to Instagram stories.

Automated Instagram stories with the day’s prices for gold, silver, USD/CAD and USD/EUR, for a TSX-listed company (STLR.TO).

What I did: Wrote a wrapper around ffmpeg and deployed it with a price scraper on a DigitalOcean instance, plus a Dockerized Nuxt app to render each frame.
What I learned: How to automate a daily publishing job: render a page, record it, encode the video and post it.

A barter marketplace: listings, profiles, chat and a live trade feed.

A listing site for trading things, not selling them: profiles, real-time chat and a home feed that updates as trades are posted.

What I did: Designed and built it in roughly 45 hours with Nuxt and Supabase, server-side rendered, with real-time chat.
What I learned: Start on the free tier and let volume decide: email moved from SendGrid to Postmark because volume was low and the free plan generous. The codebase can spin up a listing site in a day.

Reconcile

From a voice assistant for returns to automated tax for stock and crypto trades.

Reconcile began as a consumer voice assistant that tracked Amazon returns and refunds. The team saw a bigger opportunity in tax and built automated tax products for stock and crypto trades, for consumers and businesses.

What I did: Built the design system and the early landing pages, and coded parts of the React application.
What I learned: The returns assistant helped the team recognise a larger opportunity in stock and crypto tax.

05 2020

Yield

Zero-coupon bonds, on-chain, for fixed-rate lending on Ethereum.

Yield used on-chain zero-coupon bonds for fixed-rate lending on Ethereum. It started as a consumer product, then funds and larger financial institutions showed interest in earning a fixed rate. The team stopped when demand wasn’t strong enough.

What I did: Created the design system and helped the engineering team implement the interface in React and on-chain.
What I learned: Interest from larger institutions didn’t turn into enough demand to keep the product going.

Financial services for gig workers, without the credit score.

Moves built financial services for independent gig workers, using what it learned about their work over time to assess them beyond a traditional credit score.

What I did: Designed the Android-first MVP and its loan application flow.
What I learned: How a lending product could assess gig workers through their activity over time, beyond a credit score.
